Established in 1993, Leataata Preschool, Education and Wellbeing Hub has been providing total immersion Samoan early learning services to the Samoan community of West Auckland for more than 20 years.

About

We provide Samoan children and their families with after school education programmes, literacy and numeracy programmes for parents, and partnerships with local schools.  We provide adult learning opportunities and intergenerational programmes for children and their grandparents.

Our wraparound support for families helps their children to make the most of their learning opportunities.  This includes a food bank, financial literacy, driver’s license support, parenting support, older people’s support, and language and culture initiatives aimed at strengthening families and keeping our Pacific languages alive.

Our Story

Logo Meaning

The young coconut that is produced from the tree represents the children of Leataata o Tupulaga and our love for them. In the legend, the three holes at the top of the coconut symbolised the eel and his love for Sina.

The Coconut Tree is known as the 'tree of life' because of the resources it produces from every part of the tree.

The Coconut tree represents the different skills and knowledge that the families of the preschool and education hub can acquire, and producing fruitfulness.

The Siapo patterns represent the passing of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next.

The Pacific Ocean represents the depth of the connections and relationships that exist between the Pacific communities.

Leataata Vision

To generate sustainable socio-economic returns for Samoan communities and individuals in Massey.

Leataata Mission

“High Quality Early Childhood Education is the only proven technique that will alter the life course of a child.”

Our programme is based on Te Whariki & DOP’s the N.Z Early Childhood curriculum.

We offer the children a self choice developmentally appropriate programme based on educational equipment designed to stimulate children to think, problem-solve, progress physically, emotionally and socially.

The trained staff interact with the children, extending language and thought.Children build their learning on their previous knowledge and the staff support and nurture that learning. Our programmes are designed for children to be active, to be involved with materials and other children. The children have freedom of choice and play with the equipment and materials set out.

iii

Changing Lives

Children are encouraged to be self disciplined. All children are encouraged to take care of and to value the equipment and resources in their environment. Alongside our self-selection programme we run an educational plan.

This can include visits from people in our community i.e. Fire-fighter, Health, Nurse, Police. Visits to places ego local library, music, local parks & bush walk. We bring together ideas from our Samoan world, art, craft, books and music. Children are never forced to join in, but they are encouraged to.

Other extensions to the programme will be advertised on the noticeboard, please watch out for these.
